What’s Included

Advocacy and Awareness

We advocate for local, state and national policies that address homelessness and its causes in the community. We also work with community leads and other to bring homelessness to the forefront of discussion. Through education and community conversation, everyone can be informed and become an active agent for solving homelessness.

Coordination of Services

New and existing services that aid and assist those homeless and at-risk are coordinated by the Coalition. We connect providers to one another to explore, develop and implement partnerships. In addition, we seek to streamline referrals and connections to resources through a working knowledge of eligibility criteria and program information.

Affordable Housing

We ensure that housing is of quality and affordable for those who are homeless or at-risk. In partnership with units of local government, landlords, real estate developers and others, we work to ensure that the amount of affordable housing meets the need in the region. We also seek to remove barriers to building and investing in affordable housing through policy change.

Area Source of Information

We are committed to stay up to date on the latest trends and best practices in addressing homelessness and incorporating them in Southern Indiana. A members-only blog is kept up to date with happenings of the Coalition. Additionally, we host several informational events to spread awareness of homelessness to the Southern Indiana natives.

Community Buy-In

It is important that everyone in the community recognize that each person can help alleviate homelessness. Through White Flag, an emergency shelter opened during cold temperature , the Coalition engages over 150 volunteers and 10 entities to operate the shelter. Through donation of time, talent and/or treasure, each member of the community can impact the homeless.

Continuum of care Coordination

Service providers required to participate in the CoC are supported by the Homeless Coalition. To meet the requirements set forth by HUDY, such as Coordinated Entry and utilization of HMIS, we coordinate providers to regularly meet and discuss current housing trends. In addition, we work in partnership with providers to conduct the “Point in Time” survey and the federally mandated “Street Count.” Data collected is used to demonstrate community need.

By joining the Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana, your membership dues support ongoing efforts to streamline connection to services for those in need, learn to implement best practices, and ensure the Southern Indiana area is a leader in housing its most vulnerable.
